Micronized copper wood preservatives are the latest generation of waterborne wood preservative systems in which very small (sub-micron) particles of solid copper are suspended in a liquid carrier and pressure injected into wood, thereby eliminating the need to dissolve the copper as is done in traditional copper-based preservatives. Wood treated with waterborne preservatives is typically used in residential, commercial and industrial building structures. Wood preservatives penetrate sapwood easier than heartwood. As a result, wood species such as Southern Pine, which have a high percentage of sapwood, are predominately used in pressure treating.
The choice of fastener used to bind, join or connect pressure treated wood is very important. Hot-dip galvanized or stainless steel fasteners, anchors and hardware are recommended by the Pressure Treated Wood Industry for use with treated wood. This has been the position of this industry for years and their position has not changed with the transition to the alternative copper-based products.
Key benefits of MC treated wood are:
A lighter natural color than previous "dark green" treatments
More natural wood appearance
Because of its lighter color MCA treated wood has better paint and stainability
Better corrosion protection for exterior code-approved fasteners and hardware
